Flower
Stems
During my shopping sprees for African
wax prints I found these four colourways
of the same fabric.
This inspired me to cut up the fabric,
mix them up, and put them back together
again in true patchwork style!
Wall hanging. Machine pieced and quilted.
110 x 125 cm. 2005

Autumn
On The Forest Floor
Thoughts of the forest floor in autumn
crossed my mind as I put these fabrics
together. The bronze of the bracken, guinea
fowl scuttling though the fallen leaves,
and with a little luck even a little dappled
sunlight! The bracken piece of fabric
had been waiting patiently for a couple
of years to be used when I finally found
the right quilt for it.
Wall hanging. Hand-dyed, stamped, 'flower
pounded', sun-dyed and batik cottons.
Machined pieced and machine quilted.
60 x 80 cm. 2004.

Flying
Geese Stay On The Drunkard's Path And
Follow The Stars
The name of this
quilt is taken from the book "Hidden
In Plain View" - which tells the
history of the underground 'quilt code'
used by slaves escaping from the American
plantations to freedom in Canada. The
slaves were told to: Follow the flying
geese as they migrated north; stay
on the drunkard's path to avoid
capture; and follow the stars as
a guide. The story is really only a theory,
but I found it fascinating.
Wall hanging.
Machine pieced and quilted.
85 x 60 cm. 2001.
NFS. Private
collection.

The Cats
Crept In
Wondering what to do with this beautiful
piece of tie dyed cloth, too many people
said, "It's too nice to cut into." So
I took the scissors out and cut it up!
Then, it was just a case of putting it
back together again. And then "The Cats
Crept In."
Wall hanging. Machine pieced and quilted.
75 x 100 cm. 2002.

I've Got
A Rock 'n' Roll Heart
I feel this line, taken from one of my
favourite songs, describes this wacky
quilt perfectly. It was one of those pieces
that just sort of grew out of an idea.
Wall hanging. Machine pieced and quilted
using my own hand-dyed fabrics, Gambian
batiks and Nigerian Adire cloth.
120 x 105 cm. 2001.

Rollin'
and Tumblin'
Made as an assessment
piece for a City and Guilds course. Designing
a block and exploring the patterns it
created was a new direction for me. And
so was the hand quilting!
Wall
hanging. A mixture of hand-dyed and patterned
fabrics. Machine pieced, then hand and
machine quilted.
120 x 120 cm. 1999.
