Metric Measurement

All fabrics on The African Fabric Shop website are measured using the Metric system: Metres and centimetres. All pre-cut pieces (Fat Quarters, Half Metres and Adventure Packs) are cut to metric measurements.

For customers who think in yards instead of metres: A metre is slightly longer than a yard - about 39 inches.

If you require dressmaking lengths in yards and are not sure about the metric equivalent, there are numerous conversion sites on the Internet. Or, email me with your requirement in yards and I will convert it to the nearest metric equivalent.

What's a Fat Quarter?

A Fat Quarter is term of measurement
It refers to a square-ish piece of fabric. The term Fat Quarter is commonly used in patchwork and quilting. The common abbreviation for Fat Quarter is "FQ".

In metric terms
A FQ is a 1/2 metre of fabric, cut in half across the width. By cutting across the width (as opposed to the length), the resulting piece is about 50 x 55 cm, depending on the width of the fabric.

For patchworkers, getting these four squares or Fat Quarters from a metre of fabric is much more useful than four narrow 1/4 metre strips.

Important
All Fat Quarters on The African Fabric Shop website are calculated in metric terms.

An Adventure Pack - a bundle of Fat Quarters or Half Metres, makes a great starter kit for a textile project!
