In ages past, cowrie shells were used as currency throughout West Africa. In fact, the name of the Ghanaian currency - the Cedi, is derived from the local word for cowrie!

These stone beads are carved from the mineral bauxite. You can enhance their texture by rubbing them with a little vegetable oil, or even with your bare hands - they will start to glow!
