| Narrow strips of 100% hand-spun,
hand-woven cotton are stitched together into a whole cloth. |
| The off white
of the unbleached cotton contrasts well with the deep blue Indigo.
Patterns of checks, stripes and small motifs are woven into the
strips in order to create the overall pattern.
Like most African hand-woven cloth, Mossi has a history that goes
back centuries. These cloths played an important role in the economy
of the salt caravan trade routes. Today they are harder to find,
as the last generation of skilled weavers is dying off and there
are fewer young apprentices to take their place. |
