Workshops for textile, patchwork and quilting groups

I travel to textile groups around the UK, offering a variety of specialist workshops inspired by my love of African textiles and design. Outside the UK I've taught in France and Kenya.

All of my workshops are 1/2 day and can only be booked in conjunction with one of my Talks.

You can combine any talk with any workshop, though some are naturally complementary.

Creativity with Strip Cloth

In West Africa narrow strips of woven cloth are sewn together into wearing cloths, blankets and traditional garments.

Starting with both undyed and indigo patterned strips, we'll use appliqué, stitching and embellishing techniques to make a small wallhanging, bag or book cover.

Adinkra Stamping

Ceremonial Adinkra cloth from Ghana uses stamped symbols to express ideas and status.

Every Adinkra symbol has a meaning and there are whole 'pictionaries' of interpretations.

We'll work with real Adinkra stamps carved from calabash and, time permitting, we may make our own stamps from everyday materials.

Add: Ashanti Inspirations

Many groups like to combine this workshop with my talk Ashanti Inspirations.

Postcards from Africa

Enjoy a 'trip to Africa' and send a postcard home.

There's the scenery, the wildlife, the people and so many  quirky scenes!

Make one or more small postcard quilts using scraps of African fabrics and beads.

Handwork only, no machine required.

Wax Print Bead Making

This workshop combines two important elements of African style: wax print fabrics and adornment with beads.

We'll use vibrant, colourful scraps of African wax print fabric to make our own unique bead creations.

Then, time permitting, we can combine our beads to make beaded jewellery.

Or, you can save your beads and use them to embellish a quilt or wallhanging. It's up to you!

Indigo Sampler

There are hundreds of cloths and textiles in Africa made using indigo.

We'll use some of them to make a small sampler featuring as manyu different indigo fabrics as we can find!

There will be a £2.50 per person supplement to cover the cost of materials.
