Vintage Mossi Indigo Cloths

Handwoven indigo cloths from Burkina Faso

These cloths are traditional wrappers or shawls worn the Mossi peoples of Burkina Faso.

The larger cloths with short or no fringe are for women. The smaller cloths with long tassled fringe are for men - worn either as a shawl or head turban.

Narrow strips of handwoven cotton - 10 cm / 4 in wide - are stitched together into a whole cloth, then dip dyed several times in indigo.

These pieces are at least 25 years old and show some wear, but they are all in excellent condition for their age. The indigo colour has aged gracefully and the cloths have a lovely, soft feel. Heavier than machine spun cotton, often age and wear has made these cloths finer than their modern counterparts

Use as a wallhanging or throw. Or, if you feel adventurous, you could create a garment or cushion covers.

Each cloth is a unique creation: there is only one.

Sizes vary. Whole cloths: usually about 115 x 200 cm / 45 x 78 in. Shawls: usually about 71 x 160 cm / 28 x 64 in, not including tassled fringe.
