From Kayes, Mali. Machine spun, handwoven strips of cotton, 10 cm / 4 in wide, sewn together into a whole cloth, stitched or tied to create a resist, then dip dyed by hand in indigo. Some small threads (sometimes white, light blue or gold) may remain in the cloth after the maker has unpicked the resist stitching. You can remove these easily or leave them to contribute to the genuine handmade character of the cloth.
Note: The strips that make up this cloth have a woven pattern of vertical black and white stripes. When overdyed with indigo, the black stripes are slightly darker than the white stripes - see image.
