Dish and Bowl Baskets

Beautiful and useful handwoven dish basket from Zambia.

Men carefully harvest the root hairs of the makenga tree, making sure the tree is not harmed and continues to grow. The roots are boiled and sometimes dyed with natural pigments, before skilled women weave their magic. The whole process takes about six months!

These baskets are very tightly woven and quite stiff.
